  15. congestive heart failure brought on by diabetes; in Seattle.
  16. First elected to Congress in 1936, he served six terms in the
  17. Senate. Fellow Democrat Walter Mondale once joked that as
  18. chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Magnuson divided
  19. federal funds fifty-fifty: half for his home state of
  20. Washington, half for the rest of the country.
